Draft Coverage This Weekend

Good morning Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins fans!  Wrapping up things at the AHL Marketing Meeting in Springfield, MA today and will be making the trek down to Philadelphia for the 2014 NHL Draft.

It has been and will be a busy time for the Pittsburgh Penguins organization.  Yesterday, Mike Johnston - formerly of the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League - was named Pittsburgh's head coach. The focus now quickly shifts to the first  draft for Jim Rutherford as General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Pittsburgh currently holds the 22nd pick in the first round, but, barring any trades, will have to wait until round four for their next pick, where they have the 113th selection.  The Penguins also own picks at 145 (5th rd), 173 (6th rd) and 203 (7th rd).  For a complete list of the NHL Draft order, click here.

The Penguins have typically been active in the trade department over draft weekend.  Last summer saw Pittsburgh acquire a second-round pick from San Jose and select goaltender Tristan Jarry, who went on to backstop the Edmonton Oil Kings to the Memorial Cup.  Penguins prospect and 2014 Canadian Hockey League Defenseman of the Year Derrick Pouliot came to Pittsburgh by way of the team's acquisition of the eighth overall pick during the 2012 Draft at CONSOL Energy Center.

I will be taking a tour around Philly tomorrow, hitting up landmarks, maybe even grabbing a cheesesteak (Pat's or Geno's anyone?), before heading to Wells Fargo Center for the opening round the 2014 NHL Draft.  I'll be providing updates all weekend long with interviews, audio and video.

Make sure to check back here and also follow me on Twitter and Facebook.  And of course, make sure you're following the W-B/S Penguins on Twitter and Facebook as well.

Time to hit the road...
